Dying too young

Last month I wrote about the death of a friend who was like a brother to me when we were kids, and sadly, tonight I am going to have to do the same.  This time it hits a little closer to home, though.

I haven't had much time for this to sink in, so my words may not be quite as eloquent, but I felt the need to write it down.

There are some moments in time that you will never forget. You keep playing them over and over again in your head, wondering if they were real. This afternoon I had one of those moments.  My mom and I had just gotten home from shopping for one of my cousins' baby's birthday gifts. We were happy and laughing and having a good day. She dropped her purse in its usual spot and went to the bathroom, and I sat down on the sofa to look over my purchases.

My mom's cell phone began to ring. I ignored it as I always do, but it rang again almost immediately, so I figured it might be important.  By the time I got to it, it had stopped again, but I saw that it was my aunt - my mom's oldest sister - so I took the phone to her. We met just outside the bathroom, and I told her who it was, and she started to call her back. I went into the bathroom.

I had just shut the door when I heard my mom start to say something and laugh. I can't remember what she said; I just remember it starting out like any other phone call between sisters.  Then I heard my mom say, "What? What? Oh my God." I could hear the shock in her voice, and at first I thought something wonderful had happened. But then I heard her crying, and I knew it was not wonderful at all.

I found my mom sitting at her desk, phone to her ear  with a dazed look on her face. I asked her what was wrong. She kept waving me off, but finally she mouthed to me that  my cousin was dead.

So many things went through my mind. Why? How? Are they sure? When she finally got off the phone, she told me what happened. It didn't seem real.

I don't really have much more to say about it right now. He's older than me, but still only 35, which is way too young for anyone to die. It just doesn't make sense to me, but I guess God had other plans for him.
