Happy 233, USA!

Quote of the Day: America has never been united by blood or birth or soil. We are bound by ideals that move us beyond our backgrounds, lift us above our interests and teach us what it means to be citizens. - President George W. Bush

Most anyone who knows me, knows I joke about hating the 4th of July. (You can read why here: Sarah Way Down South: Quote of the Day 7/4/08 - USA's DOB.) But the truth of the matter is, all personal goofiness aside, what this day stands for means more to me than I could ever put into words...especially when I have to be at my family's cookout in an hour!

So, what I'm going to say is this: I hope you all have a good one, enjoy your fireworks, parades, and cookouts, but also enjoy your freedom and liberty...while you still have it. Maybe if you get a moment, think about the people who have sacrificed to give it to you...from the founders of our country to the men and women who serve in the military! Such an overwhelming feeling!

I watched "1776" again last night, and even though it is a musical, it sf fairly historically accurate, In order for the story to be told there was a bit of artistic license taken.

"1776" is something I have seen numerous time, and the first time I saw it was in 1976 while I was a junior in high school. My history teacher took a group of his "pets" to Des Moines to see the movie, and he told us before we saw it, "Remember, these men didn't know what the outcome of their actions were going to be when they did what they did." With that in mind, talk about Intestinal Fortitude.

And it was mentioned several times in the movie that the men who wrote and signed the Declaration of Independence was signing their own death warrant. Many of them lost just about everything they had, as did many of the people who fought the war.

Also, yesterday, I watched several documentaries about the Revolutionary War and was amazed as to how many women who would step into the fight and man a gun, when their husbands fell.

You are so right, so many men and women, and even children, sacrificed so much, and in some cases all, for us to enjoy what we have. Freedom isn't free!
