Quote of the Day 8/30/07

"I think knowing what you cannot do is more important than knowing what you can do. In fact, that's good taste." - Lucille Ball

August 30, 2007

All those big city nights...

So, I have a question for all of you out there I may not have asked...surprisingly, I've had a couple of people e-mail me from here who I don't even know...there's a song that used to come on the radio, I'd say 2000 - 2002 and it was obviously something Dungeon Familyish (I think I recognized voices, maybe even Andre 3000?) and I think it sampled the song "Cars" by Gary Numan. I have googled and googled. That's really all I have to go on but someone has to know I'm talking about. It may have just been on Atlanta radio, I'm not really sure.

But anyway, I haven't got much to say tonight...I figured I'd get tired of posting regularly, eventually! If there's one thing I can't stand, it's people over the age of say, 20, who keep a "blog" or myspace page or whatever that's basically the equivalent of "what I did today" or just a myspace page in general (though it is fun to look up people I went to school with and make fun of them!) I didn't want this to come to that, but look at what I'm doing!! I've actually been busy the past few days and have plans to be busy for the next week or so and hopefully beyond.

I'll go ahead and get this out of my system - breaking news - I think I'm kind of giving up on the whole watching Red Eye. It's not that I don't enjoy the show, but something about watching it is tiresome -- I can't quite put my finger on it. (No, not the fact that it's on at 2:00 AM!) It may be that I basically sit and watch, waiting for 2:30 and 2:55 and when you don't always pay attention to the rest of it, out of context some of the humor in those two segments is lost. There are a lot of pretty regular guests that I love and some I loathe. I don't know, I just don't see myself giving the show much more of my time...it's an amicable breakup though. No hard feelings! So, I guess you don't even have to worry about anymore Andy Levy posts or references (unless, I don't know, he gets his own show or it turns out he's some sort of Iranian spy?). I just haven't been so smitten with someone on TV in years! But you CAN worry if I find another show to focus on for the next few weeks (like I have this one) because I'm boring the hell out of even myself -- as a matter of fact, it seems like I had this same conversation here last week? Luckily, most of the other stuff I watch includes news, sports, reruns, and Family Guy.

Alright, I'm off because I'm convinced I have carpal tunnel in my wrist and figured I'd lay off using it for a while. I don't know when I'll be back, maybe a quote of the day here or there...because you know I aspire to be original and NO ONE does that! Or maybe I'll just delete this sucker all together and go focus more on other things. Who knows, right?

*For the record, the title of this post has nothing to do with the post itself. I'm just listening to that song and feeling a bit nostalgic.

Quote of the Day 8/28/07 Winston Churchill

"If you have ten thousand regulations, you destroy all respect for the law." – Winston Churchill

I suppose I'll start writing about political type matters again eventually, but as of late, I haven't been able to muster up the energy for many reasons. But I did see a bit about junk food and trans fats that scared me a little bit, today. No, not the junk food and trans fat consumption but the accompanying nanny laws. Where are we headed? Something to think about.

Michael Vick finds God, Falcons find the end zone, and I find a new computer

Unless you live under a rock, you heard Michael Vick's poor pitiful me press conference today. You heard how he's sorry, he needs to grow up, he puts his life in the hands of Jesus, he screwed up, he's a bad role model, yada yada yada. All the fine things his lawyers and publicists spent hours pouring into a heartfelt statement. I wouldn't be surprised if even Arthur Blank had a hand in that...or maybe he has come to his senses and is down at the local Humane Society being photographed holding puppies and making a large donation? While I don't blame Blank for Vick's actions, I do hold him accountable for what this town has been through lately as far as professional sports are concerned. The last single big owner of sports teams in Atlanta was Ted Turner and even though I find him to be a complete douche bag, he ran his operation a lot better. His happy little ass was sitting in a seat next to Jane Fonda, not on the pitcher's mound with Tom Glavine, patting him on the back after every strike. And as far as Michael Vick needing to "grow up" and be responsible, he's had plenty of off the field mishaps to do that with. He just didn't get away with this one. And that is really all I am going to say about him unless something new happens.

In other Falcons' news, did anyone see the game tonight? I'd say it was the first chance we got to really see Joey Harrington and he actually didn't look that bad. He managed to go put up similar...slightly better...numbers than Carson Palmer and the Falcons managed to beat Cincinnati, 24-19. I'm not going to get my hopes up yet, but I can say I am impressed.

Anyway, on to more important things, I have a new laptop. A very nice Toshiba laptop with tons of memory, storage and lots of other neat things I haven't yet figured out. Toshiba seemed to be the overall consensus after calculating through suggestions and horror stories from everyone I know that doesn't own a Mac. And while I haven't exactly figured out Vista (what's with all the security? I feel like I'm breaking into some super secret government documents instead of iTunes...I thought it would take an act of congress just to install The Sims 2), it's really a nice computer. If nothing else, I can move it around without the battery going dead, it has all of its keys, and there are no cracks in the screen (yeah, the Dell had been through a lot).

Now, buying it was another story, but I'll save that for another time. Let's just say the only requirements for working at Circuit City must include being the most uninterested 16 year old in the world and walking around with a Anderson Coopersque "pensive hipster" look on your face.

So anyway, I've been sitting here playing with it for the past few hours.

Actually, I just got sucked into watching "Rock of Love." I couldn't believe Bret Michaels sent Mia home! Lacey is such a witch! I haven't been this annoyed since Flavor Flav brought New York back in season two. Did I really just say that? I watch way too much of this crap.

Quote of the day 8-27-07

"Matt Schaub and the Houston Texans became the first team to score a touchdown against the Dallas Cowboys' starters this preseason on Saturday night." - first line of the AP article linked below.

Don't say I didn't warn you: NFL Game Center: Game Recap - Dallas Cowboys at Houston Texans - 2007 3

August 23, 2007

For everything there is a season...

1. My laptop took it's last breaths today.

I didn't think it would last long after I had to do a complete Windows XP transplant last month. It was just too weak. I'm not particularly attached to it as it has been a pain in the ass since I got it, but I am particularly attached to leaving it on all day and checking in on things when I get a chance. Or cozying up next to it in bed at night while I watch TV.

Services haven't been scheduled yet as I need to extract some files from it, but I can promise you there will be no autopsy because the cause of death is already known. DELL STINKS.

2. Maybe Leo Mazzone ain't all that great.

Did you see this one? The Texas Rangers (yes THOSE Texas Rangers) beat the Orioles...get this...30-3!!! That's the first time in 110 years a team has scored 30 runs! Which leads me to ask, was Leo Mazzone really the magic behind the Braves' pitching staff? I'll be the first to admit, the site of Leo rocking back and forth in the Atlanta dugout on a warm fall night, top of the ninth, Wohlers on the mound, bases loaded gives me chills just as much as the next person, and everyone knows pitching is a big part of what got the Braves through the 90's, but maybe Glavine, Maddux, and Smoltz were really just that good and ol' "Rockin' Leo" just took the credit. I'm kidding of course (don't listen to me, I've been pulling for the Mets this year), but that is just crazy...and makes me wanna take bets on who will have the highest score this year, Rangers or Falcons.

3. Read any good books lately?

As I mentioned before, I'm reading this book, UNDERSTANDING THE HOLY LAND by Mitch Frank. Yes, it's technically a children's book and yes it's not even 150 pages long and yes I said "reading." I haven't actually had time to sit down for more than 2 minutes to read it until today (I have a good "it's been in the bathroom" joke I could insert here, but I'm trying to keep things clean these days). Anyway, I'm almost finished with it, but if you need a basic refresher course on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict...though it was written in 2005 and you know how much has gone on in just the past two years...it gives you a little history lesson anyway. I'd love to go to Israel one day, but I'm not sure it will happen.

Quote of the Day 8/21/07

I'd love to post something fabulous tonight, but I'm tired, have a headache and have a lot to do tomorrow. It's tough righting all the wrongs in the world. I don't even think I'll make it to 2:30 AM. So instead, read this and agree completely. That'll be the quote or quote-like thing of the day.

Party On

I am so proud...

Number 5!
Party Schools: The New 2008 "Best 366 Colleges" Rankings on The Princeton Review

Most of these schools are out in the middle of nowhere and there is nothing else to do. Believe me, I've been there and for whatever reason almost went back there last week to live for a few months...

Which leads me to wonder what to do next. I have a couple of ideas but nothing set in stone and probably nothing before January. And none of which involve a middle of nowhere college town....just the opposite. But enough about me!

A Former QB and Crap TV

What do the above have in common? I'm going to ramble on about them until 2:00 AM.

1. Michael Vick - I really can't say anything about him because I've been saying things about him for seven years. If I had a huge "I told you so" sign I'd just hold it up whenever anyone mentioned him to me. Having met him during the filming of the "Welcome to Atlanta" video, I can personally attest to his assholeishness. That being said, I am sticking to my word that I'd return to Falcon fandom once he was gone. I am pulling for the Falcons so hard, I even declined to watch the Colts on faux Monday Night Football with my dad roommate tonight. Actually, I was on my way out the door. But what I have to ask is what is up with all these people thinking the Falcons are going to get some great QB in his place? I've got news for you, folks, we're stuck with what we've got. Arthur Blank invested every last freaking penny he could into him...he couldn't afford to sign ME (and my playing experience is limited to Coach Dennis' 7th grade flag football unit)! Matt Schaub, who I still say had a lot of potential is gone. Patrick Kerney is gone. Going way back, Tim Dwight and possibly LT are gone. Everyone is GONE including the highest paid football player ever. Geez.

2. You might be a complete loser if you are secretly hoping Bret Michaels will pick Sam over the other girls on Vh1's Rock of Love. Seriously, I've been sucked in by those stupid "celebreality" shows. I blame Peter Brady and his 10 year old wife. I will say that Mission Man Band brings back a lot of memories of my Orlando days when I was cool and mattered (ahhh memories), but if I start hoping for Scott Baio to be 46 and married, I'll need to find a 12 step program.

2:30 AM ain't just for "Good Times" reruns anymore...

A friend asked me who this Andy Levy person I keep mentioning is, so instead of just telling her, I decided to post and see if I could break a record for how many times I could mention his name here in one week.

Anyway, for those of you who actually sleep at night, there's a show that comes on FNC at 2:00 AM called "Red Eye." It's pretty good, though I think the guests often make or break it (funny smart people with a clue = good show, airhead media girls = bad show).

But in all honesty, regardless of the guests, the "Half-time Report" at 2:30 is the best part. This Andrew Levy guy is freakin' awesome. <-- Yes I said "freakin' awesome" and made a little arrow to point to it. He has this witty, dry but wicked sense of humor and appears to be pretty darn intelligent. And OK, yeah he's kinda cute too. He's only on the show long enough for me to miss J.J. say, "Dynomite!" once or twice, but it's well worth watching. I actually googled him the other night (I know, total stalker) and all I could really find was that he's a former publicist, a staunch libertarian (which you can tell from watching the show) and possibly one of the three guys who started "The Fed" at Columbia. So check him out, flip over from TVLand at 2:30 AM like I do, or better yet, watch the whole show. You can also go to The Daily Gut (I've added the link to my faves over on left) and read some of his stuff (though I think the last thing he wrote was about Harry Potter...I guess we can overlook that). And if you're a pussy who can't stay up that late, go to YouTube...someone named "Redeyerecap" posts highlights of the show. Actually, I'll do you one better and link something at the end, here. And to think, they don't even pay me to advertise to all four of my readers... OK, here is "the best of Andy Levy" but it's four months old and just a small taste...

5 Things I've Learned Today...

1. I will never be able to sit through any Jim Carrey movie...I gave up on his "comedies" when a friend had to literally wake me up in theater after Dumb and Dumber and after watching The Number 23 today (which would have sucked no matter who was in it -- unless it was me because I would have gotten paid), I stand firm on my decision. I actually used to judge people based on if they liked Jim Carrey movies or not. Maybe I should bring that back. Works like an IQ test, I tell ya!
Actually, I do want to see A Series of Unfortunate Events so I'll make that exception. (I'm a little behind on the Netflix Queue).

2. Dude, I'm never getting another Dell. I've had trouble with this damn laptop since about three months after I got it and since I don't speak Swahili or what the hell ever, I could never quite figure out what was up with my warranty after attempting to contact Dell. I've spent more time in the last year flirting with random tech support nerds at a local shop and on message boards than I care to remember and even then, I sit here with about seven missing keys, the laptop literally taped to a little folding table, and CD-Rom that has seen it's last days as my gateway to my Sims 2 habit. Today, I officially began the search for something else.

3. The Flavor Flav roast was actually pretty damn funny...particularly Lisa Lampanelli

4. My treadmill does more than just store things...After an interesting incident with a foul-mouthed 10 year old neighbor, I decided jogging outside just wasn't an option anymore. Seriously, now that the new renters on one end of the street have realized they know the old renters at the other end of the street, it's like some sort of redneck Grand Central Station out there.

5. Apparently nice girls DO finish last and character DOESN'T count. And no, I don't care care to elaborate, unless I know you, and then you can e-mail me.

Quote of the Day 8-20-07 Family Guy

I just found a whole website of Family Guy quotes...maybe I should just make this Family Guy week.

Anyway:

Chris: "What do you do at a Young Republicans meeting?"
Alyssa: "We help those who already have the means to help themselves. Also, we perpetuate the idea that Jesus chose America to destroy non-believers and brown people."
Chris: "I don't know why, but I feel safer already."

Football Football Football

First my quote of the day:

"What is much worse than being hit by three 275 pound linemen? Getting squeezed by three co-defendents in a federal court." - Greta Van Susteren

And that's all I have to say today about Michael Vick. I tried to tell you people several years ago.

Anyway, just a few random things.

Good News: Falcons won tonight's game - their first pre-season win. Bad News: The worthy opponent? BUFFALO FREAKING BILLS. 13-10. More Good News: A few very impressive plays from rookies, Jason Snelling and Jamaal Anderson (deja vu, anyone?). More Bad News: DJ Shockley gone in the 4th quarter with a knee injury (or so I read, I didn't actually see that part of the game.) I don't know if I should be worried that Joey Harrington's response was "That's not anything you like to have happen." It's gonna be a long season.

In fantasy football news - there's an article on my AOL welcome screen that says Joseph Addai Is Fantasy's New Tiki Barber . Sorry, Tom Herrera but I MADE THAT PREDICTION SEVEN MONTHS AGO.

Now if you scroll down there's a little thing where you can put the top four fantasy quarterbacks in order of who you think is best. P. Manning is obviously first as voted by the people, but TOM FREAKING BRADY IS NUMBER TWO??? What gives? When are people going to realize he's not some fabulous get for your fantasy team? Personally, I think he's overrated...unless your league gives points for starlets dated and TV appearances. I personally think his off the field drama is going to catch up with him this year and while the stupid Patriots may make it to the Play-offs, they won't get very far. You heard it here first.

Drew Brees is number three and I can't argue with that. Why I didn't use him more last year, I don't know, but that man put some up some crazy numbers. I'd like to see how many yards he averaged per game.

And finally -- I can't resist this one and it fits the theme. I started reading "The Daily Gut" archives the other day to see if Andy Levy is really as brilliant and witty as he appears to me at 2:30 AM, and I ran across this. I would have to say... indeed he is.

Quote of the Day 8-15-07

"I'm not surprised by anything in this place anymore. This is a Republican city." - Jose Padilla's mother, Estela Lebron

That is so ridiculous. Maybe she's mad they couldn't get a jury of his peers together...I think a lot of them are at Gitmo.

August 15, 2007

What Happened to Miss Independent?*

She died a slow, horrible death today. No, I don't care to elaborate. I'll just say this is the part in the movie when George Clooney Andy Levy gets lost in my neighborhood and when he stops to ask for directions, he takes one look at me and falls madly in love. Then MH introduces me to her friend, John P. Director of Programming who manages to get me a reporting job at the station he works for and my first two assignments are reporting that I won the Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes, and it turns out Coke and Peanut M&Ms are the new fad diet and Jennifer Aniston already lost five pounds. Oh well, maybe tomorrow.

*(Yeah, I'm listening to Kelly Clarkson. Get over yourself...I like that song)

Quote of the Day 8/13/07 Shepard Smith

This one's older but keeping with my point:

"We--our government--couldn't respond. I got the sense that some people there, especially reporters, didn't realize poor people existed. I think it was a wake-up call for some media elite who grew up with a silver spoon and went to Harvard or Yale and don't really know America." - Shepard Smith on Katrina

Hmmm...

I've decided to start posting here again. I'm not sure what I will write about, but hopefully I'll come up with something. I actually thought of changing the name of this thing to something different...my cousin told me the whole Southern girl routine wasn't cute!! I said what routine? Kidding. Seriously, I spent the past few days trying to think of something to change it to and I finally decided just to keep it as is for now.

I read a TV Guide interview with Shepard Smith (one of my favorites in the media world) the other night about how his 7:00 PM show, The Fox Report, will change in September. One thing he said really stood out to me and I'd love to believe he really feels this way.

"That's why our industry is dying. If you don't change, you will die. Because the world is changing around us. If people who sit in executive boardrooms in midtown Manhattan and go out for cocktails with their executive friends and don't get in touch with the way the world is acting and reacting, this industry will die. We're not going to. We're going to change."

Way to Go, Tommy G!

Unfortunately, I missed it, but Tom Glavine won his 300th game last night!! 17 years and a move to the Mets later I still adore this man! Congrats, Tom.
